Now, I am no super parent. I do believe children above 13 can be exposed to some violence & rated R. They have to learn some day & nowadays, with everything that is out, nobody should have to be naive.
Positives:
1. Video Games Make Children Use Their Brains:
Why? Simple. You need strategy to complete every game. It isn't a matter of reading the directions as if it were a Pokemon walkthrough, it is a matter of knowing what to do & how to do it. It strongly improves the strategic minds of children.
2. Team Work:
How? When playing online, team work is required when not playing against one another, or playing against others on a team. Most teams do indeed have players who go on their own, but the formation of "clans" & groups by gamers who take it very serious usually have team strategy when they play, therefore increasing the amount of team work experience your children have.
3. Certain Games Help Children Learn About Street Life:
Despite the bad side of this in which will be posted below, children playing Grand Theft Auto & other games in that category are exposed to a lot of adult content, therefore, leaving them less naive. Children should not be naive. Telling your child something in which is rated R is not the end of the world. If your child is mature enough, they should be able to know when & where to use the information provided to them.
Negatives:
1. Going back to number 3, games like Grand Theft Auto & Call Of Duty involve children shooting, stealing, & committing other crimes. This can easily persuade children to do the same. If your son/daughter is mature enough, let them play & use number 3 above to their advantage. If not ready for it, then maybe not yet. Explain to them what they are seeing in the game for a limited amount of time, & then let them play on their own. Do this daily, so children feel like they are learning but not being "supervised" as every child hates, especially when on video games, they want to talk to their friends.
2. Addiction: Addiction is mainly never good. 95% of the time (Not official stat) addiction is not good. Your child may be putting there school work to the side & other important requirements just to play such games. Taking them away is quite the site as well. They look like they are going through withdrawals.
3. Lack Of Activity: Since games are so addicting, your child won't be exercising. Obesity rate has severely increased & will only keep increasing. Video games have a huge part of it. Limit your child's game time, but let them play when they claim to be going on with their friends. If being on with their friends is all day, lay the law down the way you want to.
4. Affiliation With Strangers: Strangers all around the world are playing with your children during online play via Xbox live. Adults harass children & it has been known they harass them by bullying them while playing over the microphone, spam their inboxes, or even try to obtain information from the children in which is enough to hack their account. Hacking can lead to just simply your child being messed with as the hacker will make there display name something absurd. OR something serious, such as obtaining credit card information & security codes.
5. Your Credit Card Is In Your Childs Hands:
It is known X-box at times does require credit cards. Once you put yours in, it is in for the most part. Most parents forget to take it out, thinking there is no auto-pay on x-box. There is. Take it out before you are charged monthly OR before your child starts using it. Going back to #4, hackers may obtain the information from the naive children they prey on. Please be careful.
